Background of the study
In Nigeria’s vibrant film industry, subtitles play a crucial role in bridging linguistic divides and ensuring that films are accessible to diverse audiences. Nigerian Pidgin, with its widespread use and cultural significance, is often employed in subtitling Nollywood productions. Translation standards in this context involve not only the accuracy of linguistic conversion but also the preservation of cultural idioms, humor, and context-specific references (Bello, 2023). Subtitling requires precise synchronization with on-screen dialogue and the adaptation of colloquial expressions into Nigerian Pidgin while maintaining the original’s intent. Despite the availability of digital translation tools, human expertise remains essential to navigate the subtleties of language and culture. This study evaluates current translation standards in Nigerian Pidgin subtitling by analyzing a range of film subtitles, reviewing translator methodologies, and incorporating audience feedback. The goal is to assess how well these standards meet the demands of the film industry and to identify areas for improvement in translation practices (Chinonso, 2024). Findings from this research are expected to contribute to the development of more consistent and culturally resonant subtitling guidelines for the Nigerian film industry.
Statement of the problem
Despite technological advancements, subtitling Nigerian films into Nigerian Pidgin often encounters issues such as misinterpretation of idiomatic expressions and cultural references, leading to subtitles that fail to capture the film’s intended meaning (Chinonso, 2024). The absence of uniform translation standards results in variability in subtitle quality across productions, which can affect audience engagement and the overall viewing experience (Bello, 2023). This study aims to identify these challenges and evaluate current translation standards to propose strategies for enhancing subtitle accuracy and cultural authenticity.
